Chapter 1 of 7
Rufus is Windows-only. Mac users were stuck.
Making a bootable Windows USB on a Mac used to mean a virtual machine, Boot Camp, or a forum thread from 2014. Rufus does it in one click, but only on Windows.
Chapter 2 of 7 ·
Boot sectors, written by hand
It writes the Windows boot sector and the MBR active flag in pure Python, detects UEFI or legacy ISOs, and splits install.wim files over 4 GB so they fit on FAT32.
The same day, copying went multi-threaded and got 20–50% faster, and the Homebrew formula went from v1.0.0 to v1.1.1.
Chapter 3 of 7 ·
Strangers started sending fixes
The first outside pull request replaced a file copy that broke on some systems with a chunked copy. People were using it on machines I'd never seen.
Chapter 4 of 7 ·
It downloads Windows for you, too
A built-in downloader fetches the official Windows 10/11 ISO, resumes if the connection drops, and refreshes Microsoft's expiring links.
Chapter 5 of 7 ·
A real Mac app for people who don't live in Terminal
A PySide6 window alongside the terminal UI. The same week: support for the new "solid" WIM files in Windows 11 24H2.
$ git log feat: add GUI support for macOS Rufus with PySide6
Chapter 6 of 7 ·
Self-updating, and open for contributions
v1.3.0 updates itself through Homebrew or git. The repo now has a license, code of conduct, contributing guide and issue templates.
Chapter 7 of 7 ·
1,500 people a fortnight, mostly from Google
Nobody was paid to promote it. People search "rufus for mac", land on the README, and install it. In the last two weeks the repo had 2,307 views from 1,539 different people, and 105 people cloned it.
Stars keep arriving every few days, and people open issues when their machine is different from mine.
